Sensor Tower review (2026): what it costs, what's free, and whether an indie iOS app needs it
The market-data platform big publishers rely on doesn't publish a price. Here's what buyers report paying, what you can get for free, and what an indie app should use instead.
Checked against Sensor Tower's demo, product and press pages, its terms of service, Vendr's buyer data, and competitors' pricing pages, on Oct 6, 2026.
The short answer
Sensor Tower doesn't publish prices: its pricing page redirects to a demo form and plans are custom-quoted annual subscriptions. Vendr reports a median contract of $75,000 a year across 40 purchases. There is a free sign-up, but full access needs a paid plan. For keyword tracking and competitor checks, indie iOS apps get more per dollar from tools with published prices under $80 a month.

01The verdict for indie iOS apps
Sensor Tower is built for companies that make decisions from market-wide data: publishers sizing a category, investors, ad networks, large studios. Its own About page says it is "trusted by more than 2,500 enterprises worldwide". An indie developer can use some of it for free, but the paid product is priced for enterprise budgets.
Worth paying for if
- You're sizing a market or category before building, and need download and revenue estimates for many competitors
- You run paid user acquisition and want to see competitors' ad creatives and spend
- You're a studio or agency where one decision is worth more than the contract
Skip it if
- You need keyword rankings and competitor listings for your own app — cheaper tools do that
- Your budget is under a few thousand dollars a year
- You'd use it once: the free top charts and published reports may answer your question
According to ASOitis's comparison of published prices (checked October 6, 2026), the median Sensor Tower contract reported by Vendr — $75,000 a year — costs about 79 times a year of AppTweak's Essential plan billed annually ($949).

02What Sensor Tower costs
There is no price list. The pricing page redirects to a demo request, which says: "We customize pricing plans for each customer - get in touch to find your perfect fit." Sensor Tower describes its business as "insights delivered to customers on an annual subscription model", and its product pages say pricing "varies based on access level, markets covered, and features."
The best public guide to what buyers pay is Vendr, a software purchasing service that publishes anonymized contract data:
| Measure | Annual contract value |
|---|---|
| Median | $75,000 |
| Lowest in sample | $29,500 |
| Highest in sample | $115,460 |
| Sample | 40 purchases |
03What you can get for free
- A free account. Sensor Tower answers "Is it free?" with: "Yes, you can sign up for free here. Full access to App Performance Insights is available via paid plans." The sign-up asks for a company and job title. What the free tier includes isn't documented, and its terms say it "may be limited, modified, or removed at any time".
- Top charts. Free, Paid and Top Grossing charts by category and country are viewable without logging in at app.sensortower.com/top-charts.
- Monthly market posts. Its blog publishes a monthly top-10 of worldwide mobile games by revenue and downloads, plus regular data digests.
- Headline report figures. The State of Mobile report is behind a form, but the press release carries the main numbers — for example, that in-app purchase spending "reached $167 billion globally" in 2025.
For your own app, the most accurate free data is already in App Store Connect: impressions, product page views, conversion rate and downloads by source. Our page on app impressions explains how to read them.
04What the paid platform does
- App Performance Insights. Download and revenue estimates, engagement and market trends across the App Store and Google Play.
- ASO. Sensor Tower says it "supports ASO by tracking keyword rankings, app visibility, category trends, and competitor positioning", and rates keywords "by effectiveness … as well as their overall difficulty for ranking". It also covers Apple Search Ads competition.
- Advertising intelligence. App Advertising Insights shows competitors' paid acquisition; Pathmatics, acquired in 2021, covers digital ad spend across channels.
- Usage and audience data. Time spent, sessions and retention from a consumer panel, plus audience demographics and overlap with other apps.
- data.ai's data. Sensor Tower acquired data.ai (formerly App Annie) in March 2024, so the two biggest app-intelligence datasets now sit in one company.
05How accurate are the estimates for small apps?
Sensor Tower's downloads and revenue figures are estimates, not reported data. It builds them from a consumer panel — "more than 10 million consumers", collected partly through its own apps such as StayFree and Luna VPN — combined with models, and says that "since no dataset represents 100% of all digital user behavior, we model our data to estimate".
It doesn't publish an error rate. Its product page describes the estimates as widely used "for directional analysis", and data shown through AppMagic carries a disclaimer that Sensor Tower "disclaims all representations, warranties, and liability as to their accuracy". Competitors argue that small apps are the weak spot because fewer panel members use them; that's a reasonable expectation, but the examples published so far are anecdotal.
Since no dataset represents 100% of all digital user behavior, we model our data to estimate
Practical rule: use estimates to compare apps against each other and to spot trends, not to quote a competitor's exact revenue. If a founder's revenue claim matters to your decision, look for a primary source.
06Cheaper alternatives with published prices
| Tool | Cheapest paid plan | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Astro | $9/month, billed yearly ($108) | Keyword research and tracking on a Mac, for one developer |
| MobileAction | Lite $15/month ($12.50 billed yearly) | Keyword tracking plus Apple Search Ads tools |
| Appfigures | Monitor $44.99/month ($35.99 billed yearly) | Keyword tracking with downloads and revenue estimates |
| AppTweak | Essential $79/month ($949 billed yearly) | Deeper keyword and competitor research |
| AppFollow | Free plan: 2 apps, 1,000 keywords | Review management and basic tracking |
Most indie apps don't need a tool before they need a plan: which 20 keywords are winnable, and what the listing should say. Our post on ASO tools vs an audit covers when a subscription is worth it, and the App Store ranking factors post covers what to work on first.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Sensor Tower cost?
Sensor Tower doesn't publish prices; plans are custom-quoted annual subscriptions. Vendr reports a median contract of $75,000 a year across 40 purchases, with a range from $29,500 to $115,460 (February 2026).
Is Sensor Tower free?
You can sign up for a free account, but Sensor Tower says full access to App Performance Insights requires a paid plan, and its terms describe the free tier as limited and subject to change. Its top charts are viewable without an account.
Is Sensor Tower worth it for an indie developer?
Usually not for ASO alone. Keyword tracking and competitor monitoring are available from tools priced between $9 and $79 a month. Sensor Tower earns its price when market-wide download, revenue and ad data drive large decisions.
How accurate is Sensor Tower's revenue data?
The figures are estimates built from a consumer panel and models. Sensor Tower doesn't publish an error rate and describes the data as useful for directional analysis. Treat them as comparisons and trends, not exact numbers.
Did Sensor Tower buy data.ai?
Yes. Sensor Tower announced its acquisition of data.ai, formerly App Annie, on March 18, 2024. In May 2026 it also acquired AppMagic as its offering for smaller businesses.
