App Store impressions: what Apple counts, and how to read the number

The top of every iOS app's funnel. Reading it wrong sends you to fix the listing when the problem is ranking, or the reverse.

Definition

App Store impressions
In App Store Connect, an impression is counted each time your app is viewed for more than one second on the App Store's Today, Games, Apps or Search tabs, including views of your product page.

Also called: Impressions · App impressions · Impressions (Unique Devices)

The short answer

Impressions count how often the App Store showed your app for more than a second — in search results, browse surfaces or on your product page. Apple divides downloads by unique-device impressions to get conversion rate. So: impressions falling means a visibility or ranking problem; impressions steady while downloads fall means the listing isn't persuading people who see it.

01What Apple counts as an impression

The number of times your app was viewed on the Today, Games, Apps, and Search tabs of the App Store for more than one second. Includes product page views.
— App Store Connect Analytics — Impressions

Two versions of the metric exist. Impressions counts every qualifying view, so one person scrolling past your app in search three times is three impressions. Impressions (Unique Devices) counts each device once. When you're judging reach, look at unique devices; when you're judging how often you appear, look at the total.

  • Counts: a search result row visible for over a second, an appearance in a Today story or Apps/Games chart or collection, a product page view.
  • Doesn't count: a view shorter than a second, a link to your app in a website that nobody opens, activity outside the App Store app.
  • Watch the overlap: because product page views are included, a visit that goes search result → product page adds more than one impression.

02From impressions to conversion rate

Total downloads and pre-orders divided by unique device impressions.

Impressions54,000Total views over a second
Impressions (Unique Devices)20,000The denominator Apple uses
Total downloads700First-time downloads plus redownloads
Conversion rate3.5%700 ÷ 20,000
Dividing by total impressions instead would give 1.3% — a common reason a tool's conversion rate disagrees with App Store Connect.

For context, Apple says developers see an average 1.6% conversion rate on default product pages, and 2.5 percentage points more when they send people to a custom product page tailored to where they came from.

03Read impressions by source, not in total

App Store Connect splits impressions by how people arrived. The total hides the story; the split tells you which lever to pull.

Source types and what a change means

05How to raise impressions

  • Rank for more relevant terms. Title, subtitle and keyword field are what App Store search indexes. Promotional text is not — Apple says it doesn't affect search ranking.
  • Use custom product pages with keywords. Since October 2025 you can run up to 70 custom product pages, and assign keywords so a page can appear in search for those terms instead of your default page.
  • Localize. Each localization is a separate set of indexed metadata. App Store Connect supports 50 metadata languages since March 2026.
  • Run in-app events. Events can surface in search and browse, adding impressions without changing your core listing.
  • Earn browse placement. Featuring and chart positions drive browse impressions; they follow ratings, updates and a strong product page.

Frequently asked questions

Do App Store impressions include ads?

Apple's App Store search source "includes views and downloads from ads that appear in App Store search results", so search impressions can include Apple Ads placements.

Why can't I filter my impressions by source or country?

Most App Store Connect filters and dimensions need at least 5 first-time downloads in the selected period, to protect user privacy. Widen the date range.

Why don't my impressions match my ASO tool?

Tools estimate or re-label data, and may use total impressions where Apple uses unique devices. Treat App Store Connect as the source of truth for your own app.

What's a good App Store conversion rate?

Apple cites a 1.6% average on default product pages. It varies a lot by category and traffic source — search traffic usually converts far better than browse — so compare against your own history by source first.
