How to make money with an app in 2026: the models, the real numbers, and what indie apps actually earn
Subscriptions, ads, lifetime plans and consumables — with the 2026 revenue data most guides leave out: what the median app earns, how few reach $10K a month, and what Apple takes.
Subscriptions are where the money is. The Paywall Setup installs RevenueCat and builds a paywall that meets Apple's rules — $99, five business days.
Get the Paywall SetupThe 30-second answer
Most app revenue in 2026 comes from subscriptions and in-app advertising, which each brought in about $150 billion in Apple's ecosystem in 2025. But earnings are extremely uneven: RevenueCat found the median subscription app makes about $72 a month a year after launch, and only 4.6% of new apps reach $10,000 a month within two years. Pricing, paywall placement and distribution decide which side you land on.
“How to make money with an app” usually gets answered with a list of models. The models are the easy part. The hard part is the distribution of outcomes: a small share of apps earn almost everything, and the median app earns less than a phone bill. Here's the 2026 data on both — and what the apps that break out have in common.
What apps actually earn
| Benchmark | Figure |
|---|---|
| New apps reaching $1K monthly revenue within 2 years | 17.3% |
| New apps reaching $10K monthly revenue within 2 years | 4.6% |
| Median monthly revenue one year after launch | About $72 |
| Top quartile one year after launch | Above $429 a month |
| Top 10% one year after launch | Above $2,574 a month |
| Median time to $1K / $10K (apps that get there) | 58 days / 109 days |

Adapty's 2026 report, from 16,000 apps, paints the same picture: “The median app earns $492/month… The top 10% capture 94.5% of all subscription revenue.” And competition keeps rising: RevenueCat counts about 2,000 new subscription apps launching a month in January 2022 and more than 14,700 by January 2026, while apps launched before 2020 still generate 69% of all subscription revenue.
According to ASOitis's reading of RevenueCat's 2026 data, the median subscription app makes about $72 a month a year after launch and only 4.6% of new apps reach $10,000 a month within two years — while new launches grew from about 2,000 to more than 14,700 a month between 2022 and 2026; building the app is no longer the hard part, getting it found and paid for is.
The monetization models
| Model | How it works | What the data says |
|---|---|---|
| Subscriptions | Weekly, monthly or yearly access | 63.5% of apps in RevenueCat's data are subscription-only |
| Hard paywall | Subscribe or start a trial before using the app | 10.7% of downloads pay within 35 days vs 2.1% for freemium (RevenueCat) |
| Lifetime plan | One payment, permanent access, alongside subscriptions | 23.2% of apps add a lifetime option |
| Consumables | Credits, coins, boosts | Most common in games; 10.7% of apps mix them with subscriptions |
| In-app ads | Paid placements shown in the app | $151 billion in 2025 across Apple's ecosystem — more than digital goods sales ($149 billion) |
| Paid download | Pay once to install | Rare for new apps; no 2026 benchmark found |

For most indie apps the choice is between subscriptions and ads. Ads need scale — revenue grows with daily active users. Subscriptions can work with a small audience if the app solves a problem people will pay for repeatedly. Our hard vs soft paywall guide covers how to gate a subscription app.
What subscription apps charge
| Plan | RevenueCat (median / most common) | Adapty (global median) |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | Most common $5; median $5–$5.90 | $7.48 |
| Monthly | Most common $10; median $8 | $12.99 |
| Yearly | Median $34.80 (up from $31.60) | $38.42 |
The two reports use different samples and methods, so compare within one source. Adapty also reports weekly plans earning 55.5% of subscription revenue.
Pricing is one of the few levers you control on day one. Cal AI charges $29.99 a year in the US, according to CNBC; QUITTR about $30 a year, according to New York magazine — both near the median, with no free tier. See our Cal AI and QUITTR teardowns.

Apply for the Small Business Program as soon as you launch: new developers qualify, and it halves Apple's cut on everything. In the US, Apple's guidelines have allowed buttons and links to your own website checkout since May 1, 2025 — our Guideline 3.1.1 page explains the rules and the storefront limits.
What the apps that break out do differently
- They build demand outside the store. Cal AI reached more than $30 million in annual revenue before MyFitnessPal bought it; QUITTR's co-founder says it earns over $500,000 a month. Both grew through creators. In our App Store keyword data, “cal ai” scores a popularity of 68, above “calorie counter” at 65, and “quittr” scores 60 while App Store search returns nothing for its category's literal terms.
- They gate value with a paywall after onboarding. Both use hard paywalls at the end of a personalised onboarding — see our onboarding guide.
- They test. Adapty says apps that run experiments “earn 40x more than those that don't.” Cal AI ran 123 paywall experiments, according to Superwall.
- They make the listing do work. Name, subtitle and keywords that match what people search — our keywords playbook covers the 100 characters most apps waste.

- Launch with a subscription, a trial and a paywall at the end of onboarding; add a lifetime plan later if people ask for it.
- Price near your category's median, then test.
- Join the Small Business Program on day one.
- Spend as much effort on distribution — creators, your App Store listing, a website AI assistants can cite — as on the build.
