Definition

Trial conversion rate
Trial conversion rate is the share of free trial starts that become paid subscriptions. RevenueCat's 2026 benchmark puts the median at 25.5% for trials of four days or less and 42.5% for trials of 17 to 32 days.

The short answer

Trial conversion rate is converted trials divided by started trials. RevenueCat's State of Subscription Apps 2026 reports a median of 25.5% for trials of four days or less, 37.4% for five to nine days and 42.5% for 17 to 32 days. Most cancellations happen on the day the trial starts, so the paywall and first session decide much of the outcome.

01How to calculate it

Trial conversion ratetext
Trial conversion rate = converted trials ÷ started trials

Example: 400 trials started, 140 became paid subscriptions
→ 140 ÷ 400 = 35%

RevenueCat's trial conversion chart splits the funnel in two: a start rate (started trials ÷ new customers) and a conversion rate (converted trials ÷ started trials), and says “the product of these two rates… is your Overall Conversion Rate.” Track both — a paywall change can raise trial starts while lowering conversion.

The finding, in one line
According to ASOitis's reading of RevenueCat's 2026 benchmark, the gap between short and long trials is worth about 170 paying subscribers per 1,000 trial starts — a 25.5% median for trials of four days or less against 42.5% for 17 to 32 days — even as short trials grew from 42% to 46.5% of all trials; it's worth testing, not assuming, because the apps choosing each length differ.

RevenueCat's headline: “Trials of 17+ days convert 70% better than short trials (42.5% vs. 25.5%), yet apps keep shifting to 3-day trials” — short trials rose from 42% to 46.5% of all trials. It calls 5 to 9 days “a ‘sweet spot’ balancing length and conversion.” Adapty's own medians point the same way: 30% for 1–4-day trials and around 45% for longer ones.

03Why day 0 decides so much

Share of trial cancellations that happen on day 0 (RevenueCat SOSA 2026)
Trial lengthCancelled on day 0
3-day55.4%
7-day39.8%
14-day35.7%
30-day31.1%

RevenueCat adds that “84% of 3-day trial cancellations and 64% of 7-day trial cancellations occur between Day 0 and Day 1.” A common pattern is starting the trial and turning off auto-renew straight away to avoid being charged. The fixes are in the first session: deliver a result before the paywall, make the trial terms clear, and remind people before it ends instead of hoping they forget. 04Apple's free trial options and rules

  • Three intro offer types. Apple: “There are three types of introductory offers: free trial, pay up front, and pay as you go.”
  • Trial lengths. A free trial can last 3 days, 1 or 2 weeks, 1, 2, 3 or 6 months, or 1 year (App Store Connect Help).
  • One per group. Apple says “each person is only eligible to redeem one introductory offer per subscription group.”
  • Disclosure. Apple's subscriptions guidance: “clearly indicate how long the free trial lasts and the price billed once the free trial is over.” Our Guideline 3.1.2 page covers the paywall rules App Review checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good trial conversion rate?

It depends on trial length and category. RevenueCat's 2026 medians are 25.5% for trials of four days or less, 37.4% for five to nine days and 42.5% for 17 to 32 days; Health & Fitness apps have a 37.7% median.

How do you calculate trial conversion rate?

Divide the number of trials that became paid subscriptions by the number of trials started. If 400 trials started and 140 converted, the trial conversion rate is 35%.

Is a 3-day or 7-day free trial better?

In RevenueCat's 2026 data, trials of five to nine days have a 37.4% median conversion against 25.5% for four days or less, and fewer 7-day trials are cancelled on day 0. Test it for your app — the apps choosing each length differ.

Why do so many users cancel free trials on day 0?

Often because people start a trial and turn off auto-renew straight away to avoid being charged. RevenueCat found 55.4% of 3-day trial cancellations happen on day 0, so the first session and clear trial terms matter most.

How long can an App Store free trial be?

Apple allows free trials of 3 days, 1 or 2 weeks, 1, 2, 3 or 6 months, or 1 year, and each person can redeem one introductory offer per subscription group.
