App icon design that lifts App Store conversion: what 106 top icons show, and Apple's 2026 rules

We measured the colours of 106 top App Store icons across 12 categories. Some niches have a strict visual convention; others have none. Here's what that means for your icon, plus Apple's Liquid Glass rules and how to test.

The 30-second answer

A good App Store icon is simple, recognizable at small sizes and readable in Apple's default, dark, clear and tinted looks. Apple recommends minimal shapes, little or no text, and illustrations over photos; since 2025 icons are layered Liquid Glass designs built in Icon Composer. Test alternatives with product page optimization — Apple reports one developer's icon test lifting conversion 8%.

Your icon appears everywhere your app does — search results, charts, ads, the Home Screen — and it's usually the first thing someone judges you on. Apple publishes clear design rules but no data on what wins. So we looked at what the top apps actually ship: 106 icons from the top results for 12 common App Store searches, measured for colour and checked by eye.

Why the icon matters

Apple's product page guide puts it simply: “Your app icon is one of the first elements of your app that users see, so it's essential to make a strong first impression that communicates your app's quality and purpose.” It recommends a simple, recognizable design and testing options with your audience.

Apple even publishes one result. On its product page optimization page, the developer of Peak Brain Training tested the hypothesis that “app icons with a robot design will convert better than other icon designs.” After 44 days and three treatments, the robot icon came in at −3.5% and an orange design at −2.9%, while a brain icon won: an 8% conversion rate increase at more than 98% confidence. The hypothesis was wrong — which is exactly why icons get tested, not decided.

What 106 top icons show

On October 11, 2026 we pulled the top results for 12 searches from Apple's iTunes Search API (US), downloaded each app's icon and measured its dominant colour, then checked the classifications by eye.

Dominant icon colours of top App Store results, by search (106 icons, Oct 11, 2026)
SearchIconsMost common dominant coloursConvention
sleep tracker9Blue (5); 5 of 9 use a moonStrong
vpn9Blue (5), purple (2); 3 of 9 use a keyStrong
notes9White (5)Strong
meditation9White (4), blue (4)Moderate
photo editor9Black (3), white (3)Moderate
workout9Red (3), blue (2)Weak
habit tracker9Grey (3), red (2)Weak
calorie tracker8Orange (2), then one each of several coloursNone

Dominant colour is the most common colour in each icon after reducing it to five, so white or black often means the background. The other four searches — budget, language learning, weather and music — showed no single colour in more than three icons. Across all 106, light icons outnumbered dark ones 43 to 24.

According to ASOitis's colour analysis of 106 top App Store icons across 12 searches on October 11, 2026, category conventions are strong in some niches — five of nine sleep trackers and five of nine VPNs are mostly blue, and five of nine sleep icons use a moon — and absent in others, where no colour leads more than two of eight calorie trackers; breaking a strong convention is what makes an icon stand out in search.

What to take from it: in a category with a strong convention, your icon sits in search results next to several near-identical ones. A blue moon among blue moons is hard to tell apart; a contrasting colour or shape is easy to spot. In a category with no convention, colour won't differentiate you — a clear, simple symbol will. Either way this is a description of what ships, not proof of what converts. Test before you commit.

Apple's 2026 rules: Liquid Glass and Icon Composer

Since WWDC25, iOS, iPadOS and macOS icons are layered. Apple's Human Interface Guidelines say they “include a background layer and one or more foreground layers” and “take on Liquid Glass attributes like specular highlights, refraction, and translucency.” You build them in Icon Composer, which ships with Xcode, and Apple says “people can choose whether their Home Screen app icons are default, dark, clear, or tinted in appearance.”

Apple's icon guidance, in its own words
RuleWhat Apple says
Keep it simple“Embrace simplicity in your icon design… with a minimal number of shapes.”
Avoid text“Include text only when it's essential to your experience or brand” — no “Watch”, “Play” or “New”
Avoid photos and UI“Prefer illustrations to photos and avoid replicating UI components”
Skip effects“Let the system handle blurring and other visual effects”
Work in every look“A great app icon is visible, legible, and recognizable, regardless of its appearance variant”
Size1024 × 1024 pixels, layered; “the system automatically scales your icon”

Two practical consequences. Icons are part of the binary: App Store Connect help says “if you want to change your app icon after publishing, you must create and upload a new version of your app.” And a flat icon made from a screenshot or photo now looks worse twice — in small sizes and in the clear and tinted looks.

What App Review checks on icons

  • No one else's brand. Guideline 4.1(c): you can't use “another developer's icon, brand, or product name in your app's icon or name, without approval.” See Guideline 4.1.
  • 4+ suitable, and consistent. Guideline 2.3.8 asks for icons that suit a 4+ audience even if your app is rated higher, and similar icons across sizes and alternates.
  • Your rights. Guideline 2.3.9: “You are responsible for securing the rights to use all materials in your app icons.”
  • No other platforms or Apple hardware. Guideline 2.3.10 bans other platforms' names and imagery; Apple's HIG says don't use replicas of Apple hardware — see Guideline 5.2.

How to test an icon

  1. Ship the alternates in your binary. Apple says product page optimization icon treatments need “all variants of your icon in the binary of your published app,” including dark, clear and tinted versions.
  2. Test one bold change. A new symbol or a contrasting colour, not a shade tweak. With modest traffic only large differences can win inside Apple's 90-day limit — see our product page optimization guide.
  3. Wait for 90% confidence. Apple labels a treatment better or worse once it reaches that threshold.
  4. Remember it follows the user. Apple notes a treatment icon “will display on the App Store as well as on their device” for people who download during the test.

Vendor case studies show the size of the stakes, measured on their own testing pages rather than Apple's: SplitMetrics reports a Halloween icon variant for MyTona converting 9.3% better than the control. Treat such numbers as directional — your own test is the only result that applies to your app.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an App Store icon be?

1024 × 1024 pixels. Apple's guidelines describe iOS, iPadOS and macOS icons as layered at that size, and the system automatically scales them to smaller sizes. Icon Composer can export a flattened version for marketing.

Should an app icon include text?

Usually not. Apple's guidelines say to include text only when it's essential to your experience or brand, because it doesn't support accessibility or localization and is often too small to read.

Can I change my app icon without an update?

No. App Store Connect help says that to change your app icon after publishing, you must create and upload a new version of your app. Icon tests also need the alternate icons in your published binary.

Does the app icon affect App Store conversion?

It can. Apple's own example is Peak Brain Training, whose brain icon increased conversion 8% at more than 98% confidence in a product page optimization test, beating a robot design the developer expected to win.

What colours do top app icons use?

It depends on the category. In our check of 106 top icons, sleep trackers and VPN apps were mostly blue, notes apps mostly white, and calorie trackers had no common colour at all. Light icons outnumbered dark ones 43 to 24.
