ASO for habit tracker apps: why two small indie apps outrank the giants
The second and third results for "habit tracker" have about 2,500 ratings each. A 757,000-rating app sits below them. Here's what that tells you.
Checked against Apple's iTunes Search API and the public US App Store product pages of all 13 apps, sampled Sep 30, 2026.
The short answer
In the September 2026 snapshot, 10 of the 13 top habit tracker listings put "Habit Tracker" in the name itself, and the two indie apps ranked right under the leader have only about 2,500 ratings each — relevance beats rating volume here. Subtitles split by audience (ADHD appears in three), four listings haven't been updated since spring or earlier, and five apps sell a lifetime unlock.

01The short read
Habit tracking looks saturated from the outside, and Apple's own Guideline 4.3(b) singles out "simple timers" and similar crowded categories. But the data says something more hopeful for a small team: in this category, a precise name and an active listing still count for more than an enormous review count.
- Exact-match names dominate. Ten of 13 names include "Habit Tracker". The first result is literally called "Habit Tracker" — 13 characters.
- Small apps rank high. HabitKit (2,441 ratings) and Onrise (2,578) sit second and third, above Finch's 757,538.
- Subtitles pick an audience. ADHD, accountability, goals, journaling — the leaders use the second field to say who they're for.
- Freshness varies a lot. Four listings haven't shipped an update since May 2026 or earlier.
- Lifetime pricing is normal here. Five apps sell one, which almost never happens among calorie trackers.
02Names: exact match beats brand
The name is the heaviest-weighted text field on the App Store, and this category uses it almost uniformly. The listings fall into three naming strategies:
| Strategy | Examples | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Category phrase only | Habit Tracker · Habit Tracker - Daily Goals | 2 |
| Brand or descriptor + "Habit Tracker" | HabitKit · Onrise · Grit · Strides · Dots · Habit Rabbit · Productive · Routine Planner | 8 |
| Brand + a different category | Finch: Self-Care Pet · Structured: Daily Planner Todo · Atoms - from Atomic Habits | 3 |
Names here are also shorter than in calorie tracking: 25.6 characters on average, with only 4 of 13 using 28 or more. When the category phrase is two short words, the leaders don't pad the name — they put the extra meaning in the subtitle.
03Subtitles: say who it's for
With the category phrase handled by the name, the subtitle is where these apps differentiate. The vocabulary is about audience and motivation rather than features:
| Word | Listings | Positioning |
|---|---|---|
| daily | 8 | Routine framing — the most common modifier |
| planner | 7 | Crossing into day planners and to-do lists |
| goal / goals | 6 | Outcome framing |
| routine | 4 | Structure for people who struggle with it |
| ADHD | 3 | An explicit audience: Habit Tracker, Routine Planner and Grit |
| accountability | 2 | HabitKit and Habit Tracker - Daily Goals |
| journal | 2 | Finch and Onrise, toward reflection |
| pet | 2 | Finch and Habit Rabbit — motivation through a character |
Three subtitles naming ADHD is the clearest signal in the sample: an audience with a specific need, and listings that say so plainly. It's also the pattern to copy — not the word "ADHD", but the move of naming the person the app is built for in the second field.
04Why a 2,400-rating app can rank second
HabitKit is a one-developer app. In this snapshot it ranks directly below the category's exact-match leader with 2,441 ratings, while Finch — with 300 times as many — sits fourth. Apple doesn't publish its ranking formula, but the listing makes the visible factors easy to read:
- Relevance in the heaviest fields. "Habit Tracker - HabitKit" carries the exact phrase in the name; "Streaks & Accountability" adds two more intent words.
- A strong rating, not a large one. 4.85 average — among the highest in the sample.
- Wide localization. 17 metadata languages, well above the category median of 10.
- An active listing. Last updated September 21, 2026.
We looked at HabitKit's revenue trajectory in an earlier field study on the homepage. The ASO lesson is simpler: in a category where the core phrase fits in a name, a small app that is precise, well-rated and maintained can hold a top position against far larger ones.
05Stale listings: the opening in plain sight
| App | Last update |
|---|---|
| Habit Rabbit: Habit Tracker | Nov 18, 2025 |
| Atoms - from Atomic Habits | Feb 16, 2026 |
| Productive - Habit Tracker | Mar 19, 2026 |
| Habit Tracker - Daily Goals | May 11, 2026 |
| The other 9 | August or September 2026 |
A listing that hasn't changed in months is a listing whose keywords, screenshots and subtitle were written for last year's searches. For a newcomer, these are the positions most likely to move. Apple's 4.3(b) text also says apps in well-established categories may be removed "if they are not updated, improved, or do not attract customers" — a reason to keep your own listing moving, too.
06Pricing: lifetime unlocks are normal here
Eleven of 13 apps list in-app purchases; Onrise and Habit Tracker - Daily Goals show none on their product pages. The highest listed price ranges from $12.99 (Habit Tracker) to $149.99 (Strides), with a median of $59.99 — the same median as calorie trackers, but a far wider spread.

Other models
- No lifetime option listed: Finch, Productive, Atoms, Routine Planner, Strides
- In-app currency: Habit Rabbit ("Carrots")
- None listed: Onrise, Habit Tracker - Daily Goals
Five of 13 selling a lifetime option, against one of 12 in calorie tracking, likely reflects the product: a habit tracker is cheap to run, and its users are wary of yet another subscription. If you sell subscriptions only, expect visitors to compare you with a one-time price.
07A playbook for a new or struggling habit app
Put the category phrase in the name
"Habit Tracker" plus your brand, like eight of the top 13. It's short enough that you lose nothing by including it.
Use the subtitle to name your person
Who is it for, or what motivates them? ADHD, accountability, streaks, a pet, a journal — pick one and say it plainly.
Localize past the median
Ten languages is the category median; four notable apps are English-only. Localized name, subtitle and keywords are a direct reach advantage.
Keep the listing moving
Ship updates and refresh promotional text with each one. Stale competitors are the positions you can take.
Offer a one-time price
Five competitors already do. If you don't, show why the subscription is worth it on the paywall and in screenshots.

Frequently asked questions
Should my habit app be called "Habit Tracker"?
Including the phrase in your name is standard — 10 of the 13 top listings do. Pair it with a brand so you can build recognition, like "Habit Tracker - HabitKit" or "Grit: Daily Habit Tracker".
Can a small habit tracker app really rank?
In this snapshot, HabitKit and Onrise rank second and third with about 2,500 ratings each, above apps with hundreds of thousands. Precise naming, strong ratings, localization and regular updates matter more than raw volume here.
Is habit tracking too saturated for App Review?
It isn't on Apple's named list, but a generic tracker can still draw a Guideline 4.3(b) rejection. Build and describe a clear difference — an audience, a method, a motivation mechanic — before you submit.
Should I offer a lifetime purchase?
Five of the 13 top apps do, so visitors will often see one. It can raise conversion from subscription-averse users; whether it helps revenue depends on your retention and costs.
Why do Finch and Structured show up for "habit tracker"?
App Store search reads subtitles and keyword fields too, and popular apps rank for adjacent terms. Finch's subtitle includes "Habit Tracker", and Structured is a daily planner many people use for routines.
