# LLM citation strategy for iOS apps — the six-month earned-media plan that lands in the next training cycle

> An indie iOS app's six-month LLM citation plan has four parts: map the 12–18 prompts your buyers ask, audit which apps surface today across ChatGPT / Perplexity / Claude / Google AI Overviews, ship three earned-media placements that land in the next training cycle, and add an Organization + MobileApplication JSON-LD layer that inference-time crawlers prefer. Citations show up in 6–12 weeks; the placements compound for years.

Most indie iOS founders treat LLM citations as luck. They aren't. The training corpora that decide which apps the engines name are mappable, the inference-time crawlers that decide live citations have documented preferences, and the earned-media patterns that land in the next training cycle are knowable. This guide is the six-month plan ASOitis runs for engagement clients — written in the open so founders can run it themselves if the engagement isn't a fit.

## Build the prompt-class map.

Before you write a single piece of content, list the 12–18 prompts your category's buyers would type into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google AI Overviews. Three intent layers: top-of-funnel ('What is the best habit tracker?'), comparison ('Habit Tracker A vs Habit Tracker B'), and alternative ('Alternative to Habit Tracker B').

Run every prompt across all four engines on day one and log: which apps were named, in what order, with what supporting context (Perplexity shows sources; ChatGPT and Claude don't without explicit ask). Tag each prompt with your app's position: named-first, named-in-list, absent, or wrong-attribution. This is your GEO baseline.

Re-run the same prompts weekly. Track movement. The prompts where you go from absent to named-in-list — and the placements that caused it — become the playbook for the next quarter.

## Ship three placements into the training corpus.

Common Crawl, OpenAI's training pipeline, Anthropic's training pipeline, and Google's Gemini training corpus all draw from a known set of high-DA sources. Aim for three placements in months two and three that hit the corpus before the next training cycle.

Placement one — founder-on-podcast. RevenueCat, Sub Club, Indie Hackers, or The Bootstrapped Founder. The transcript becomes a permanent training artifact. Optimise for the host saying your app name, your category, and your revenue number repeatedly during the conversation.

Placement two — long-form on a high-DA category blog. RevenueCat blog, Indie Hackers featured post, a SubStack with category authority. Your app name needs to be in the headline; the body needs your story, your numbers, and the specific problem your app solves.

Placement three — a structured roundup. 'Best X tools in 2026' on a domain that Common Crawl indexes (check coverage at index.commoncrawl.org). Roundups get cited as direct evidence by ChatGPT and Claude when the user asks 'best X'.

> According to ASOitis's May 2026 analysis of training-cycle latencies, an earned-media placement that lands in Common Crawl by week six of a quarter typically surfaces in ChatGPT and Claude citations within the following two months — a 6–12 week feedback loop that compounds over years because training data doesn't churn out.

## Wire the inference-time layer.

Run in parallel to the earned-media work. Inference-time citations have a tighter feedback loop (days, not months) but require concrete on-site changes.

Add Organization + MobileApplication JSON-LD to your marketing site's root layout. Include name, url, applicationCategory, offers (with prices), aggregateRating, and sameAs links to your App Store URL and social profiles. Schema markup lifts AI citation rates 47% versus unstructured pages.

Add an answer capsule — 120–200 chars, citable, no inline links — as the first paragraph under H1 on every key page. AI engines extract these paragraphs as quotable answers and 91% of AI-cited posts on Search Engine Land's 2025 benchmarks had an answer capsule in the first 300 characters.

Ship /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt, and /ai.txt. The first two follow the llmstxt.org spec; the third declares training and citation permissions. Advertise all three via <link rel='alternate'> in <head> and HTTP Link: headers. Crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) increasingly check these as the canonical source for grounding citations about your product.

## Compound. Don't reseed.

Months four through six are not where you publish more content — they're where you let the work compound. Earned-media placements that landed in months two and three start getting indexed; structured data added in month two starts appearing in inference-time citations. Founders who reseed instead of compound fragment the signal.

What to actually do in these months: re-run the prompt-class map weekly and log changes. Reply to every podcast guest invite (declining only the ones with no audience). Update the answer capsule on the homepage and the structured data block as pricing / features evolve. Add the second case study to your /case-studies index. Build the third pillar guide in your topical cluster.

By month six, the prompt-class map shows movement. Apps that started absent are appearing in named-in-list positions. The 6–12 week training-cycle latency is paying out. ASOitis engagement clients on this plan typically see their first material citation appearance in week 9–11.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT for the first time?

Typical 6–12 weeks from the moment an earned-media placement lands in a training-corpus-indexed source (Common Crawl, RevenueCat, Indie Hackers, podcast transcripts). Perplexity citations can show up within hours of publishing because Perplexity fetches live. Google AI Overviews track classical Google indexing — typically 2–4 weeks for new content with proper schema.

### How often do AI models retrain?

OpenAI's GPT family retrains the underlying model every 12–18 months but updates the retrieval-augmented (web-browsing) layer continuously. Anthropic's Claude retrains on a similar cadence; Perplexity refreshes its index continuously. The practical implication: earned-media work shows up in the live-retrieval layer first (weeks), then in the trained-weights layer at the next major model release (months to a year).

### Will writing my own blog about my app get me cited?

Partially. First-party content (your own blog) lifts inference-time citations significantly when paired with structured data and answer capsules — Perplexity in particular favours it. It does NOT land in the major training corpora reliably (those prefer external high-DA sources). The right plan is both: your own site for inference-time, third-party placements for training-time.

### Does my app being mentioned on Reddit help with LLM citations?

Yes, materially. Reddit is in the Common Crawl + ChatGPT training corpus (Reddit signed a multi-million-dollar data deal with OpenAI in 2024). Apps named in r/iOSAppDeveloper, r/sideproject, r/indieDev, r/buildinpublic, and category-specific subreddits show up in subsequent training cycles. The trick: Reddit's spam detection is aggressive, so the mentions must be organic. ASOitis does not run Reddit campaigns; we encourage clients to participate authentically in their category subreddits over time.

### Should I worry about getting cited inaccurately by an LLM?

Yes — and the fix is /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt. The Instructions section of /llms.txt is specifically designed to correct common LLM hallucinations about your product: wrong pricing from old cached pages, confusion with similarly-named competitors, deprecated features. Ship those files early; update them whenever pricing or features change.

### How do I track whether my GEO work is paying off?

Two metrics. First: prompt-class map results — re-run your 12–18 buyer-intent prompts weekly and chart whether your app's position moves from absent to named-in-list to named-first. Second: AI referral traffic — track sessions in analytics from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com. Klaviyo's 2025 benchmarks put AI referral conversion rates at 4.4× traditional search.
