# ASO for calorie tracker apps: what the 12 top listings do with 60 characters

> In the September 2026 snapshot, all 12 top calorie tracker listings put both "calorie" and "tracker" in their name or subtitle, and 11 add "counter" — so covering the category's core phrasings is table stakes. Half now say "AI". The gaps are elsewhere: three large apps are English-only, and yearly prices cluster around $59.99, leaving room above and below.

Every leader in this category says "calorie" and "tracker". The openings are in the words, languages and prices they don't use.

## Key facts

- **Apps sampled:** 12 — Top results for "calorie tracker", US
- **Avg name + subtitle used:** 54.9 / 60 — Characters, out of Apple's limits
- **Say "AI":** 6 of 12 — Every 2023–24 entrant but one
- **English-only:** 3 of 12 — Including two with 98k+ ratings

## The short read

This is one of the most contested categories on the App Store. The 12 apps in the snapshot below hold 4.1 million ratings between them, MyFitnessPal alone 2.37 million, and every one of them shipped an update in September 2026. A new app doesn't win here by out-optimizing incumbents on the same words. It wins by choosing a narrower promise and saying it more clearly.

- **The core vocabulary is saturated.** "Calorie" and "tracker" appear in all 12 listings; "counter" in 11. Leaders use nearly every character: 54.9 of 60 on average across name and subtitle.
- **AI became a positioning word.** Six of 12 say "AI". The newest entrants lead with it, and older apps (MyFitnessPal, Lifesum, Foodvisor) have added it.
- **Localization is uneven.** Median 12.5 metadata languages, but MyNetDiary, Cronometer and BitePal are English-only.
- **Prices anchor near $59.99.** That's the median top in-app purchase price. Cal AI's highest listed price is $29.99; Lifesum's is $119.99.

## The words: what every leader covers

Apple's search matches words across your name, subtitle and keyword field, so a listing doesn't need an exact phrase in one place to rank for it. The leaders still make sure both of the category's main phrasings — "calorie counter" and "calorie tracker" — are covered in the most heavily weighted fields.

**How many of the 12 listings use each word in name or subtitle**

| Word | Listings | What it signals |
| --- | --- | --- |
| calorie | 12 | The category term; 11 of 12 put it in the name itself |
| tracker | 12 | The newer phrasing — every listing covers it |
| counter | 11 | The legacy phrasing; only BitePal skips it |
| food | 8 | Broadens toward food-log and food-diary searches |
| macro / macros | 7 | The fitness-leaning audience; MacroFactor builds its whole name on it |
| AI | 6 | Photo or scan logging — the 2024–26 wave |
| weight loss | 4 | Outcome language, rather than method language |
| nutrition / diet | 3 each | Health framing over counting |

_Counted from the snapshot below. A word counts once per listing even if it appears in both fields._

The practical takeaway: if your name and subtitle don't cover both "calorie" and "tracker" or "counter", you're handing away the category's main searches. But because everyone covers them, they won't differentiate you. Your remaining words — and your keyword field — should go on the specific thing you do better.

## The AI shift, and what it means for a new app

Three of the four apps released since 2023 put "AI" in their name or subtitle — Cal AI, BitePal and Calo — and so do three older names that repositioned: MyFitnessPal ("AI Nutrition & Macros Tracker"), Lifesum and Foodvisor. Photo-based logging has gone from differentiator to expectation in about two years.

That changes what a new entrant should claim. "AI calorie counter" now describes half the page of results. Stronger positioning names who the app is for or what it does that the others don't: a specific way of eating, a specific cuisine database, an athlete's macro targets, logging without an account. The subtitle is where that goes.

> **Crowded isn't the same as closed, but App Review notices.** Apple's [Guideline 4.3(b)](https://asoitis.com/app-review/guideline-4-3-spam) rejects apps that are "indistinguishable from what's already widely available". Calorie trackers aren't on Apple's named list, but a generic AI calorie scanner in 2026 is exactly the kind of app that draws the objection. Build — and describe — the difference first.

## Localization: the cheapest gap in the category

Every localization is a separate set of indexed metadata, which is why language count matters for reach. The spread in this category is wide:

**Metadata languages among the 12**

| Languages | Apps |
| --- | --- |
| 20+ | Calo (27), fatsecret (23), Foodvisor (20) |
| 10–19 | MyFitnessPal (19), Cal AI (15), Lifesum (14), Numify (11) |
| 2–9 | Lose It! (8), MacroFactor (2) |
| English only | MyNetDiary (167k ratings), Cronometer (98.7k), BitePal (55.6k) |

Three established apps with more than 320,000 ratings between them compete in every non-English storefront with English metadata. A new app that ships localized names, subtitles and keywords in the five or six largest markets for this category competes there on more even terms. App Store Connect has supported 50 metadata languages since March 2026, so the constraint is effort, not availability.

## Pricing: where the ceiling sits

Every app in the sample sells in-app purchases. The highest price each one lists on its product page is usually its yearly plan, which makes it a fair proxy for what the category charges:

- **Median top price: $59.99.** Six of 12 top out exactly there.
- **Low end: Cal AI at $29.99,** alongside smaller in-app purchases such as a $0.99 streak restore.
- **High end: Lifesum at $119.99** for a yearly plan. Foodvisor and MacroFactor ($89.99) and MyFitnessPal and Lose It! ($79.99) also sit above the median.
- **Lifetime and weekly plans are rare.** One app lists a lifetime option (Lose It!) and one a weekly plan (BitePal).

Pricing isn't an ASO field, but it shows up on the product page and in the reviews that feed your rating, so it affects conversion. Launching well above $59.99 needs a visible reason on screenshot one.

## A playbook for a new or struggling calorie app

1. **Pick the promise before the keywords** — One sentence on who it's for and what's different. Everything else follows from it — including whether App Review sees a new app or another clone.
2. **Cover the category words, then spend the rest on your wedge** — Make sure "calorie" plus "tracker" or "counter" are in name or subtitle, then use the remaining characters and the keyword field for the specific audience or method.
3. **Localize where incumbents didn't** — Start with the largest markets where the English-only leaders are weakest, and localize name, subtitle, keywords and screenshots together.
4. **Price with the median in mind** — $59.99 a year is what visitors will compare you to. Be clearly below it, or show why you're above it.
5. **Measure by source** — Track search and browse [impressions](https://asoitis.com/glossary/app-impressions) separately after each change, so you know whether a new subtitle changed ranking or conversion.

## Beyond the App Store: demand on Google

People also research these apps on the web, and increasingly get their answer from an AI summary rather than a list of links. Google search volume shows how large that research layer is:

**US Google searches per month (DataForSEO, Sep 2026)**

| Search | Monthly volume | Difficulty (0–100) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| calorie counter app | 60,500 | 91 |
| best calorie tracking app | 33,100 | 70 |
| cal ai | 18,100 | 23 |
| calorie tracker app | 9,900 | 91 |
| ai calorie tracker | 1,000 | 63 |

_Google web searches, not App Store searches — Apple doesn't publish App Store search volumes. Difficulty is DataForSEO's 0–100 keyword difficulty score._

"Best calorie tracking app" is a comparison question, the kind AI assistants now answer directly. Apps that appear in those answers are the ones with independent reviews, comparisons and a clear, citable description on their own site — which is the Generative Engine Optimization side of the job, covered in our [GEO guide for iOS apps](https://asoitis.com/guides/geo-for-ios-apps).

## Frequently asked questions

### Should my calorie app say "counter" or "tracker"?

Cover both across name, subtitle and keyword field. All 12 top listings use "tracker" and 11 use "counter"; App Store search combines words across those fields, so you don't need both phrases in the name.

### Should I put "AI" in my calorie app's name?

Only if AI logging is genuinely your core experience. Half the top listings already say it, so on its own it no longer differentiates — pair it with who the app is for or what it does differently.

### Is the calorie tracking category too saturated for a new app?

It's crowded and the leaders update constantly, but localization gaps and specific audiences leave room. What doesn't work is a generic clone — commercially, and potentially at App Review under Guideline 4.3(b).

### What do calorie tracking apps charge?

In this sample, the median highest listed price is $59.99, usually a yearly plan, with a range from $29.99 (Cal AI) to $119.99 (Lifesum).

### How many languages should a calorie app launch with?

The leaders' median is 12.5 metadata languages. A new app doesn't need that on day one, but five or six well-chosen locales puts you ahead of three large English-only competitors.
